Al's Airworld Mig-21

Another new model for the 2006 show season is Als All new Airworld Mig 21. We chose this model as a demo plane as it was totally different to most other model jets out there. It’s menacing shape and angular lines give this model amazing presence in the sky.

Surprising to most people (Including Al) Is how well mannered the Mig is and what a massive speed range it has. It seems just as stable during slow speed flight as it does doing its supersonic fly by’s. Look out for this model at a display soon as it is proving to be a real favorite with Pilots and Public alike.

The model is from an Airworld all composite kit. Its powered by an AMT Pegasus HP Turbine. JR 8411 and 8511 run through Al’s favored install of a Power box system 40/24 professional board through to a JR DS100o Receiver. 2x Als 2400 mah 6 volt RX packs are used in the nose to obtain the correct balance.

This model is relatively simple and only features Flaps and wheel brakes as special Options. Al chose to omit the three independent speed brakes and finds that the aerodynamic breaking is more than adequate to slow this model for landings.

The model was built by one of Al’s regular and trusted Builders Paul Metcalf. A special Metcalf touch can be found in the dual hinged articulating main gear doors. Paul designed this system to enable the gear door to clear this huge 5” main wheels during retraction. A big Thankyou to Paul for what must be his best build to date.

The model was painted (As always) by the ever reliable Ray Habgood. Al chose the scheme from a website that specialized in plastic kit building, and ray duplicated the model in near perfect detail. It gives just the right balance between new and well used of the full size.

It’s always nice when a model turns out to exceed expectations, but with the Mig 21 it was especially rewarding as it really is a great plane to fly and always has Al excited when he display it.
